Lesson 1 - The Sun and Life on Earth

Background for Teachers:

Definition of, benefits and harms of electromagnetic spectrum; personal risk factors according to where you live, who you are, what you do.

Goal(s):

Introduce students to sun and its role; create understanding of personal risk in relation to exposure.

Objective(s):

Explain role of sunlight relating to life on Earth; list wavelengths of UV radiation; describe personal sun exposure risk; understand need for protective behavior; explain interaction between environment, behavior, and physical characteristics as they relate to personal damage from exposure.

Time:

45 minutes

Supplemental Activities

1.1 Worldwide Elevation Analysis:
Students calculate increased risk of UV exposure for real-world cities at different elevations.
Open activity sheet

1.2 All About Ozone:
Students read an article about the ozone layer and are asked to answer follow-up questions.

1.3 Evaluating Skin Type and Damage Risk:
Students use magazine and newspaper images to define skin type, skin damage, and media definitions of “healthy” skin.

1.4 Does Light Bend?:
Students see in this demonstrate the various reflective and refractive properties of light.
