Lesson 2 - Your Skin and the Sun

Background for Teachers:

Define environmental factors that contribute to skin damage from excessive exposure; introduce skin and eye biology; introduce cancer in general and skin cancer in particular.

Goal(s):

Teach students about the relationship between UV, skin, and eyes.

Objective(s):

Explain the role of skin and describe its structure; explain effect of UV light on skin and eye tissue; explain interaction between environment, behavior, physical characteristics and exposure.

Time:

45 minutes

2.1 Eye Biology:
Students read an article about eye biology and answer follow-up questions.

2.2 What Is It Like To Have Cataracts?:
Students simulate impaired vision to learn about the difficulties that occur from compromised vision.

Students analyze their own everyday behavior in terms of over-exposure risk.
