Lesson 3 - Sunscreen

Background for Teachers:

Present definition and function of sunscreens addressing specific chemical ingredients; discuss SPF, its definition and function; identify best practices.

Goal(s):

Teach students about sunscreen use as a protective behavior.

Objective(s):

Explain how sunscreen protects skin; define SPF, recognizing various levels of protection; define and illustrate good sunscreen choices from purchase to application.

Time:

45 minutes

Supplemental Activities

3.1 SPF and the UV Index:
Students compare UV Indices and minutes to skin damage for different cities at different times of the year.

3.2 Consumer Watchdog: Choosing the Best Sunscreen:
Students are asked to survey friends/family on their sunscreen preference and analyze whether the choices made were according to protective factors or marketing strategies.
