Living With Sunshine - Unit 1 - Activity Synopsis:

Setting The Stage
• 1.1 The Mystery of the Old Trunk in the Attic: A Tale of Sun Safety.
Through C.J. and Josh’s adventures, students learn about human skin, the beneficial and harmful effects of the sun and the effects of weather on the amount of sun exposure they receive.

Learning Activities
• 1.2 Many Types of Skin.
Students learn about the functions of the skin. They also observe and compare characteristics of human skin and graph tallies of the number of students who already have experienced some type of skin damage (sunburn, tan, freckling).

• 1.3 What Makes the Seasons?
Students explore how the position of the Earth in relationship to the sun affects seasons, climate, and the amount of sunlight they receive.

Wrapping It Up
• 1.4 Invisible Sunlight.
A poem summarizes what students have learned about the factors that affect the amount of sunlight a region and its residents receive.

Assessing Student Learning
• 1.5 Seasons, Sun, and Skin.
Students express thoughts about a season, the sun, and their skin. They also draw pictures to illustrate their paragraphs.

Limiting Time In The Sun - Unit 2 - Activity Synopsis:

Setting the Stage
• 2.1 My Day Outdoors.
Students become more familiar with individual behavior related to the amount of sunlight they receive. Students are introduced to the concept of limiting time in the sun, by avoiding peak sun hours and finding shade, as one way to practice sun safety.

Learning Activities
• 2.2 Which Shade Is Best?
Students are introduced to the concept of limiting time in the sun by staying indoors, staying in the shade, and avoiding peak sun hours. Through a demonstration, they also learn how the sun’s position affects size of shadows and amount of shade provided.

• 2.3 Know Your Shade Game.
Students associate words and pictures with sun safety concepts in this listening game.

Wrapping It Up
• 2.4 Sun Safety Pledge.
Students make a pledge to practice sun safety and share their goals with the class.

Assessing Student Learning
• 2.5 Sun-Safe Clues To Help You Pick and Choose.
Students match clues with pictures and answers to produce true statements about sun safety and limiting time in the sun.

Wearing Cover-Up Clothes - Unit 3 - Activity Synopsis:

Setting the Stage
• 3.1 My Sun-Safe Day.
Students discuss the types of clothes worn on one day to familiarize them with individual practices. They graph the results of a class clothing tally.

Learning Activities
• 3.2 Clothes of Yesterday and Today.
Students explore differences in styles of clothes and hats during three time periods and discuss differences in the amount of protection provided.

• 3.3 Who Knows Their Hats and Clothes?
Students rate the protectiveness of different outfits and hats using indicators such as style and the amount of skin that is covered.

Wrapping It Up
• 3.4 Our Cover-Up Story.
A brief story summarizes what students have learned about cover-up clothes and protecting skin from the sun.

Assessing Student Learning
• 3.5 Can You Make The Student Sun Safe?
Students make the child sun safe and write the names of the sun-safe items they used.

Using Sunscreen - Unit 4 - Activity Synopsis:

Setting the Stage
• 4.1 About My Day.
Students discuss their sunscreen lotion and lip balm use to familiarize them with individual practices.

Learning Activities
• 4.2 The 5 Ws of Sunscreen.
Students learn about the 5 Ws (What, Who, When, Where, and Why) of sunscreen and lip balm. They create a sunscreen mobile to illustrate the concepts they have learned.

• 4.3 Which Is Better?
Students rate the protectiveness of sunscreen lotions and lip balms based on their SPF. They also learn how seasons affect the time it takes the sun to damage skin.

Wrapping It Up
• 4.4 Sunscreen For Sale!
Wearing sunscreen and sunscreen lip balm is something that everyone can do and it is an important strategy for staying safe in the sun. In this activity, students will decide how to add up bills and coins in order to buy the best sunscreen and sunscreen lip balm.

Assessing Student Learning
• 4.5 All About Sunscreen.
Students make Josh and Natalie sun safe and complete statements about sunscreen use.
