Living With Sunshine - Unit 1 - Activity Synopsis:
Setting the Stage
1.1 Focus on Sun Damage.
Students discuss and observe the consequences of sun exposure. Too much
exposure to the suns ultraviolet light can damage skin and eyes
very seriously.
Learning Activities
1.2 Factors That Affect Skin Cancer Rates Around The World.
In this prediction and comparison activity, students use what they know
about inherited and environmental factors that impact exposure to ultraviolet
light and predict rates of skin cancer for different locations around
the world. The impact of global migration is discussed.

1.3 What Can You Do?
In this summary activity, students take a quick quiz to review factors
related to their skin phototype and environment that they may or may
not be able to change to reduce the amount of sun exposure they receive.
Assessing Student Learning, Unit 1
1.4 The 4th of July Decision.
After reading a scenario, students help the characters decide which
activity they should choose to be the most sun safe.

Limiting Time In The Sun - Unit 2 - Activity Synopsis:
Setting the Stage
2.1 Focus On The Time You Spend In The Sun.
Students fill out and score a brief survey to examine how much time
they typically spend in the sun, especially during peak sun intensity
hours (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
Learning Activities
2.2 School Shade Expedition.
In this outdoor exploration and ultraviolet light measurement activity,
students identify and grade shade on the school grounds. They learn
to distinguish between good and poor sources of shade. They make recommendations
on how the school could change its schedules or structures to be more
sun safe for students.
Wrapping It Up
2.3 Sources of Shade Game.
Students complete a word puzzle with the names of several sources of
shade and take a quick inventory of whether they have each of those
sources of shade at home and school.
Assessing Student Learning, Unit 2
2.4 The Suggestion Box.
Using standard letter format, students write a letter to the school
principal about shade, peak sun intensity hours and sun safety.

Wearing Cover-Up Clothes - Unit 3 - Activity Synopsis:
Setting the Stage
3.1 Focus On What you Wear In The Sun.
Students fill out and score a brief survey to examine how often they
wear cover-up clothing. Students learn that clothing is a sunblock
and that wearing cover-up clothing is the second way to reduce sun
exposure.
Learning Activities
3.2 What Makes Clothing Sun Safe?
In this experiment, students will evaluate the ability of clothing
to block ultraviolet light based on its construction (tightness of
the weave). They will do this using a UV intensity card.
3.3 What Is Cover-Up Clothing?
In this reading and comprehension activity, students work independently
to learn about the sun-protectiveness of different types of clothing
(shirts, pants, shoes, swimsuits, hats and sunglasses). Students read
brief histories about different types of clothing and answer questions
on what they have read. Students examine how clothing style, construction,
and color affect sun safety and how clothing trends have changed over
time. They discover which choices they can make to be sun safe.
Wrapping It Up
3.4 My Action Plan.
In this summary activity, students review their own sun-safe behavior
and develop a personal action plan to put what they have learned into
practice.
Assessing Student Learning, Unit 3
3.5 Cover-Up Clothing Critique.
Students analyze and critique a set of outfits in terms of how each
outfits style, fabric construction, and color contributes to
the overall sun safety of the outfit.

Using Sunscreen - Unit 4 - Activity Synopsis:
Setting the Stage
4.1 Focus On Sunscreen.
Students fill out and score a brief survey to examine how often they
use sunscreen. Students learn that using sunscreen is the third line
of defense against the damaging rays of the sun.
Learning Activities
4.2 The ABCs Of UV Light.
Students learn about sunscreen, how to use it, when to use it, and why
to use it from the perspective of the damaging effect ultraviolet light
can have on the different layers of human skin.
4.3 SPF And The UV Index.
Students investigate the National Weather Services UV Index and
calculate safe exposure times based on SPF value and the UV Index.
Wrapping It Up
4.4 Write A Sunscreen Radio Commercial.
In this small group activity, students write and present a persuasive
radio commercial for a new sunscreen product.
Assessing Student Learning, Unit 4
4.5 SPF Math.
Students calculate answers to SPF math problems using the UV Index.
Assessing Student Learning, Units 1-4
4.6 Squared Away.
This activity is designed to provide an opportunity for students to
demonstrate what they have learned about all aspects of sun safety through
pictures and statements.
